Santi Giraldo participated in the first Grand Slam of the year: The 2015 Australian Open.
Santi was designated as the leader of the 30th serie tournament to its present position in the 32nd place world ranking and settled for the third time in his career in the second round of the main draw of the Australian Open, having done so in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
His first match was against the 201 world raking player from Czech Republic, Jan Hernych, who had just beated the qualification draw, heading up to the main draw of the tournament. His best participation in this Grand Slam was in 2011.
The match had an even start until the fifth game, where Santi got the first break in the set, thanks to his “returns”, which were a major factor in his game. Finally the set closed with a 6-3 score.
In the second set gave his best and got two “breaks” to win the second set with a 6-2 score.
Santi reached the third set with confidence and broke his opponent’s service twice. That’s how he won the last set with an overwhelming 6-3 score.
It’s important to state that Santiago had a high percentage of first services (79%), with which he held his “serve”, his biggest strength.
With the result, Santi heads up to the second round of the Australian Open and will face the American S. Johnson who defeated K. Edmund in three sets. Last year Johnson reached the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 of Tokyo, the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 of Washington, the semifinals of the ATP 250 of Delray Beach and the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 in Auckland and Newport.
