On Wednesday night Santi Giraldo played his second encounter at the 2015 Australian Open. In his search to move to the next round of the main square, the Colombian played against the American Steve Johnson, near 7 pm Colombian time.
The American player “Stevie” had just won against the young South African player Kyle Edmund in the preliminary round. Giraldo, who had defeated on Monday the Czech, Jan Henrych in three straight sets, hadn’t faced previous matches against Johnson.
The game started around 7:20pm Colombian time, and lasted around 2 hours and 1 minute. It finished with a 3-6 4-6 2-6 score favoring Steve Johnson.
The beginning of the match was complicated for Santi, since the American accomplished an early break and went 1-3 up in the score. Santi settled in the court with strong returns, recovering and equalizing the score 3-3, however S. Johnson broke Santi’s service once again, winning the first set with a 6-3 score.
The second set started the same way, until the fifth game when Johnson broke Santi’s service, who managed to recover but couldn’t settle on the break options due to Johnson’s strong service, who hardly won the second set with a 6-4 score.
The third set started better nevertheless Johnson got two breaks. It was difficult for Santi to recover and the final score concluded in 2-6.
Giraldo concludes this way his participation in singles at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season that gathers 128 of the best players around the world. Near midnight, Santi and J. Sousa will face Benneteau and Vasselin.
