The Colombian player of Colsanitas’s Team, (world position 69 of the week) defeated Spaniard Albert Montañes, who is currently ranked in position 63.

Santi, world position 69 of the week, defeated Spaniard Albert Montañes –who is currently ranked in position 63 and in 2011 was ranked in position 22– by 6-1 and 7-6(7-3). Santi made his way into the tournament’s top 16 players, during a match of 1 hour and 14 minutes,a round in which he will face the winner of the match between Dutch Robin Haase, world position 43 and 8th favorite of the tournament, and Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez.

Giraldo and Montañes had previously faced each other in three previous events. Two of them resulted in victories for the Colombian. Among Montañes’s achievements are six titles and five subtitles in ATP tournaments, he was also last year’s winner of the Niza ATP, in 2010 won the Stuttgart ATP and Estoril, in 2008 won the Amersfoort ATP.  Besides the cup of Niza, Montañes won the semifinals of Kitzbuhel ATP in 2013, the quarterfinals of Umag ATP and the quarterfinals of Sao Paulo ATP. The main draw of the event is headed by  Spaniard David Ferrer (world position 3), German Tommy Haas (world position 12) and American John Isner (world position 14), among others.

Santiago is traveling this year with Colombian coach Felipe Beron. He will be playing in the main draw of the Australian Open after his participation in Auckland ATP 250.
