The first match of the new season was in the Heineken Open 250 in Auckland, New Zeland. Santi Giraldo debuted in his first match of the season against the French, Kenny de Schepper who earned his place in the main draw after defeating Alejandro Falla.

Santi started the game with a strong service, until the fifth game where Scheeper found a way to break Santi’s service with a turn back. Two breaks were enough to take the first set.

On the second set, Santi gave his best and managed to stay ahead with a 3-2, but the French recovered and won the match with a 6-3 score.

The return of Santi to the court sets the ending and the beginning of a new stage in his life, who barely a year ago was in the 68th position of the world ranking and now he is in the 32nd.

Santi is now looking forward to play the first Grand Slam of the year

In the second match of the day, Santi Giraldo and Joao Sousa played together against the team of Florin Mergea and Dominic Inglot, from Rumania and Great Britain, respectively, who won the game with a score of 3-6, 6-7 (10) in the Main Draw of the Heineken Open in Auckland, New Zealand.

Giraldo and Sousa had never played as a team before. They stood out for the game but the experience of the British/Rumanian couple was stronger this time due to their experience playing together in most of the tournaments.

Hours before, Sousa played against the american player Steve Johnson.

The Heinken Open is the fifth tournament of the ATP season and is part of the New Zealand tennis festival in the ASB Arena, which was founded in 1920. The place also hosts the international volleyball tournament.

The season will end on January 17th and it comes before for the first Grand Slam of the year: the Australian Open that will take place in Melbourne from January 19th to February 1st.
